Bay Area Fertility Doctor Accused of Withholding Donor Payments Appears in Civil Court

A Bay Area fertility specialist accused of failing to pay women who donated their eggs appeared in civil court Friday in San Francisco. Dr. Danielle Lane, of Lane Fertility Institute, is facing mounting legal troubles from patients, vendors, and businesses claiming she owes them thousands of dollars.

Dr. Lane was scheduled to testify under oath regarding her personal finances and assets as part of efforts by a New Jersey-based pharmacy to collect on a 2023 judgment issued against her. That pharmacy is among several plaintiffs — including former patients and suppliers — who have filed lawsuits accusing Lane of breach of contract and unpaid debts.

At least a dozen women have said they entered into agreements with Lane Fertility Institute, which operates offices in San Francisco and Marin County, to donate eggs in exchange for payments of $5,000 to $6,000. Several claim they never received their compensation, even months after the 90-day payment period outlined in their contracts. Some donors say they were eventually paid, but only after hiring lawyers to send demand letters on their behalf.

Court filings in San Francisco and Marin County reveal more than ten lawsuits have been filed against Lane, not only by patients but also by a former employee, multiple vendors, and even her landlord, who alleges months of unpaid rent and is seeking her eviction.

In the cases where she has formally responded, Lane has denied the allegations. During Friday’s court appearance, she stated she did not feel comfortable answering questions in front of the media without her attorney present. The judge agreed to postpone the hearing until December.

Before entering the courthouse, Lane briefly told a reporter, “Oh yeah, I have a lot to say about that,” before declining further comment. She did not appear to exit through the public entrance after the hearing concluded.
