Neighbors frustrated after vandals target more San Jose schools
The list of South Bay schools hit by vandals continues to grow.
Meyer Elementary School in San Jose is the latest campus targeted by vandals, who pulled and cut copper and electrical wire from underground cement boxes and panels. Windows were also smashed and the multipurpose room was ransacked.
“Super sad because I went to school here and my kids went to school here,” said Dara Cano, who lives across the streety from Meyer Elementary School.
Cano said her neighborhood is tired of seeing old school sites vandalized.
Meyer was one of eight schools the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District closed last year. The district said six of those campuses remain vacant.
Joseph George Middle School is one of the vacant campuses vandalized.
The shuttered school was recently vandalized for a second time since closing, causing an estimated $200,000 in damage for the cash-strapped school district.
The district is planning to discuss the vandalism at a special board meeting Thursday and frustrated neighbors are hopeful action will be taken to protect the schools.
