A group of San Jose residents is protesting the proposed new Costco location
Residents of a West San Jose neighborhood are opposing a proposed Costco location near a high-end shopping area close to the Saratoga border.
The proposed site for the large retail warehouse is located at 5287 Prospect Road, near the Westgate Shopping Center. The current buildings on the site would be demolished to make room for a 165,000-square-foot Costco.
A local group, Save West Valley, argues that the store is too large for the area and that the increased traffic would pose a danger to the nearby Prospect High School community.
The city of Saratoga also seeks input on the project since it would be located at the city’s border.
Costco has agreed to modify the development plan to improve crosswalks and traffic flow.
San Jose’s planning commission is scheduled to vote on the project’s environmental impact report on Wednesday night, which, if approved, would be a significant step toward the project’s final approval by the city.
