Antioch Police Propose AI to Handle Non-Emergency Calls, Sparking Concerns

The Antioch Police Department is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to manage non-emergency calls, though the proposal has drawn mixed reactions from residents.Under the plan, AI agents would be integrated into the dispatch system to take non-urgent calls and generate detailed summaries for human dispatchers. Emergency 911 calls would continue to be handled exclusively by trained personnel.Officials say the move is aimed at easing the strain on staff. Lieutenant Michael Mellone noted the department receives more than 200,000 non-emergency calls each year, and with a shortage of dispatchers, balancing those with emergency calls has become increasingly difficult. The department hopes AI can help free up dispatchers to focus on urgent situations, reviewing non-emergency reports later and assigning officers as needed.

However, the proposal has raised concerns among some community members, who remain skeptical about relying on AI in this role.
