On Tuesday, a BART train leaving SFO suddenly accelerated and then slammed on its brakes repeatedly. BART employees were heard talking about the incident over radio airwaves as they expressed future concern for passengers on board.

Radio traffic captured the concern just after 8 a.m., as a BART train was leaving SFO. Minutes later, another person is heard over the frequency, saying this isn’t the first time it’s happened.

NBC Bay Area reported last year that BART was preparing to spend $4.3 million to address a braking glitch involving its new fleet. NBC Bay Area learned BART opened an investigation in September of 2025 into more than 300 broken current collector paddles.

The paddles are part of the system that delivers power from BART’s third rail to the train.

It is unknown if Tuesday’s problem involved those paddles. NBC Bay Area reached out to BART for more information, and it sent a statement saying, “There have been no other reports of this activity from trains leaving SFO. We are looking into the matter.”

There were no reports of any injuries during Tuesday’s incident.
