Bay Area readies for World Cup as kickoff nears
With the FIFA World Cup set to begin in just days, changes are already underway at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
During the tournament, the home of the 49ers will be known as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, in accordance with FIFA sponsorship rules. Signage at the stadium has already been covered as part of the transition.
The change has also appeared online. Apple Maps now lists the venue as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium to help visitors attending matches during the tournament.
The World Cup will be played across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The tournament begins Thursday in Mexico City, while the Bay Area’s first match is scheduled for Saturday, when Qatar faces Switzerland.
Meanwhile, Team Paraguay arrived in the Bay Area over the weekend. The team landed at San Jose Mineta International Airport and will use San Jose State University as its base camp during the tournament. Paraguay’s first match is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles against the U.S. men’s national team.
