Deputies Fatally Shoot Armed Man Following Two-Hour Standoff in San Jose

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office has released new information about a fatal shooting involving deputies and a knife-wielding man in San Jose on Monday night.

According to officials, deputies pulled over the unidentified man around 7:30 p.m. near Fruitdale and Leigh avenues. The man reportedly began behaving erratically, ignored repeated commands from deputies, and then barricaded himself inside his vehicle.

A tense standoff followed that lasted more than two hours. During that time, deputies worked alongside members of the Sheriff’s Psychiatric Emergency Response Team in an attempt to calm the situation and bring it to a peaceful end.

Authorities said officers deployed several “less-lethal” devices and projectiles in an effort to avoid using deadly force. However, the man eventually exited the car holding a knife and allegedly charged toward the deputies. In response, two deputies opened fire, striking the suspect.

He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Our personnel utilized every available resource to de-escalate the encounter safely and effectively in hopes of a peaceful resolution,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in a statement Tuesday.

Officials later confirmed that one of the deputies involved in the shooting has served with the department for 24 years, while the other has nine years of experience. Both have received advanced training in crisis response. Their names have not yet been made public.

Because the incident took place within San Jose city limits, the San Jose Police Department is leading the investigation, with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office conducting an independent review.

Sheriff Jonsen said a “full and transparent review” is underway, adding, “Our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the deputies involved, who acted under intense and challenging circumstances.”
