Detective’s Report Offers New Details in San Jose Triple Homicide Case

A recently released report from a San Jose homicide detective is revealing disturbing new information about the triple homicide that occurred early Tuesday morning on Chynoweth Avenue. According to the report, Joseph Charles Vicencio, 27, is believed to have fatally shot Tarrah Lynn Taylor, 26, Jeannessa Caillean Lurie, 24, and Max Chavez Ryan, 26, inside a residence in South San Jose.
In a sworn statement outlining the facts of the case, Detective Christina Jize stated that Vicencio had a history of violence involving one of the victims, Tarrah Taylor, and had allegedly assaulted her multiple times in the days leading up to the shootings. This prior domestic violence incident, along with surveillance footage, witness statements, and Vicencio’s own admissions, played a significant role in identifying him as the suspect.
Police responded to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of gunfire and a woman screaming for help. Upon arrival, officers discovered Taylor outside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Inside the residence, officers found Lurie and Ryan also suffering from gunshot wounds. Lurie was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ryan died later at the hospital.
Though final autopsy results are pending, Detective Jize stated that all three victims are believed to have died from gunshot wounds. Crime scene investigators recovered multiple .40 caliber shell casings inside the house.
Surveillance video from the neighborhood captured Vicencio walking into the area shortly before the shootings and then fleeing immediately after. He was seen wearing distinctive clothing and carrying a satchel, which he was later recorded dumping into a nearby storm drain. That satchel was later recovered by investigators and matched descriptions provided by witnesses.
Records show that police had previously been called to the same address just days earlier, following reports of domestic violence involving Taylor. On Sunday and Monday, Taylor had reported being physically assaulted by Vicencio, including being punched, hit, and strangled. Detectives observed visible injuries to Taylor’s throat that were consistent with her allegations.
Two unnamed witnesses provided key information during the investigation, according to Jize.
The first witness, who personally knew Vicencio, told detectives they had spoken with him after the Monday domestic violence incident. Vicencio reportedly expressed concerns about Taylor and her roommate contacting law enforcement, saying he “couldn’t have any loose ends” or people talking about him. The witness said they warned him not to do anything drastic if he was considering harming others.
This same witness was in communication with Vicencio before and after the murders and noted that he had been wearing his usual gun-carrying satchel earlier in the day — the same one later seen in surveillance footage and recovered by police — but was no longer carrying it after the killings. The witness also told detectives that Vicencio used their computer to search for news about murders in San Jose shortly after the crime occurred.
A second witness, also personally acquainted with Vicencio, told detectives they received a call from him about seven hours after the killings. Vicencio allegedly told this individual he was in trouble with the police and needed help due to “issues” where he lived. When confronted about the murders, Vicencio admitted there had been a “problem” with a man at the house but claimed he had “handled it.”
Vicencio was taken into custody Wednesday and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. The case remains under active investigation, and authorities have not announced whether additional charges or suspects are being considered.
