San Jose City Council grants approval for a new Costco location

A contentious new Costco moved forward in San Jose on Tuesday night.
The San Jose City Council unanimously voted 8 to 0 to approve a conditional use permit for the warehouse store at the Westgate West Shopping Center, situated on Prospect Road and Lawrence Expressway.
Two council members recused themselves from the vote, which followed comments from dozens of people regarding the project.
Some speakers expressed support, arguing that the shopping center is deteriorating and that Costco could help revitalize it. However, others raised concerns about the store’s proximity to a high school, fearing it would lead to hazardous traffic conditions.
