The former boyfriend of the victim, 20-year-old Martin Mendoza Jr., appeared in court Tuesday to face first-degree murder charges. The courtroom was filled with family and friends of Dinapoli as the hearing began.

Mendoza’s attorneys requested a delay, telling the judge they needed additional time to conduct their investigation. Prosecutors agreed there is a large amount of evidence to examine but said they remain confident in their case.

Investigators have previously cited surveillance footage that captured Dinapoli and Mendoza together the night before she vanished. Cellphone records also appear to show both of their devices near Anderson Lake, and court filings state that Dinapoli suffered five stab wounds to the back.

The case is scheduled to return to court in February.
