The A’s informed a large number of employees who were originally furloughed a few months ago they will not be retained in 2021, The Athletic’s Alex Coffey and the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reported Saturday. 

Both publications reported that the A’s will be laying off the employees. But the specific number of jobs impacted varies. Slusser reported that the number is about 30 percent of the business operations staff.

“Today was an extremely difficult day,” The A’s said in a statement provided to The Athletic. “The Oakland A’s have completed a reorganization of full-time staff and informed a number of employees that at the end of the year they will no longer have a position with the Club.”

“These decisions are due to the unprecedented impact and continuing uncertainty of the pandemic on our operations. We are committed to providing support for those impacted by these decisions, including health care, severance, and other assistance programs.”

Other clubs, including the Giants, laid off some of their full-time employees. San Francisco specifically let go of 10 percent of their full-time staff members, which were distributed throughout the organization and included members of their baseball operations department.

The Chronicle also reported the A’s let go of business operations employees earlier this year prior to the shutdown. The A’s also informed third base coach Al Pedrique he will not return next season per The Athletic.
