San Jose Residents Call for Speed Bumps After Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Residents of a San Jose neighborhood are urging the city to install speed bumps on a busy street after a motorcyclist—19-year-old Enrique Mendoza Villanueva—died in a high-speed crash with a truck on Halloween night. Police reported that he was speeding and not wearing a helmet.

Along North 24th Street and East Saint James Street, where traffic frequently exceeds the 25-mph limit, neighbors say the speeding problem has become dangerous, especially since the road runs in front of San Jose High School.

“I think pedestrians are scared. Even with stop signs, I don’t trust that cars will stop,” said Angela, a local resident.

Andrea Villanueva, Enrique’s cousin, said the situation feels especially alarming as a parent of two young children. She and other neighbors called on city officials Wednesday night to install speed bumps to help protect families, students, and pedestrians.

“If they could put speed bumps here for everyone’s safety—our kids, the school—that would be amazing,” she said.

Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, who represents the district, noted that the area includes many hazardous roads. He said the city is working to use available transportation funds to improve safety at problematic intersections.
