Body of Missing California YouTube Fisherman Recovered in Mexico
After nearly a week of searching, the body of a well-known YouTube fisherman who vanished during a solo outing off Baja California, Mexico, has been located.
Mikey Rijavec of Ocean Beach, California, disappeared on Nov. 11 while fishing about eight miles off the coast. He had issued a mayday call reporting engine trouble, and fellow anglers tried guiding him over the phone until the call abruptly cut out.
Dozens of private boaters joined the Mexican Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard in the search effort. On Sunday, Rijavec’s body was discovered near San Cristóbal in Baja California Sur, according to an update shared on GoFundMe.
Phil Friedman — a fisherman, podcaster, and close friend — said he learned the heartbreaking news from Rijavec’s father.
“He’s an adventurer. He pushes the envelope. That’s part of what we love about him,” Friedman said.
According to the GoFundMe post, the YouTuber had been operating a small skiff that developed engine problems. While attempting to fix the issue, the motor came loose, causing the vessel to flip.
On the first day of the search, the 14-foot skiff was found drifting five miles offshore, but neither the engine nor Rijavec were onboard.
