Health officials confirm case of measles in a Santa Clara County resident

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department confirmed Saturday a measles case involving a South Bay resident who visited public places while infectious.

Health officials said the person, a Santa Clara County resident, went through San Francisco International Airport’s Passport Control, Customs and International Baggage Claim area on Monday between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The person then visited the Trader Joe’s on Coleman Avenue and the International Halal Market on East Santa Clara Street in San Jose between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday, all while being contagious. This led the department to issue a warning regarding potential public exposure to measles.

The health department added the person is an adult, believed to be exposed to measles during international travel.

According to the CDC, measles is highly contagious and can cause serious health complications, especially in children younger than 5 years of age. The symptoms include high ever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and rash.

Health authorities said the best protection against measles is the MMR vaccine.
