Menlo Park Police Officer Injured in Crash During Pursuit on Dumbarton Bridge
Traffic came to a halt along the eastbound Dumbarton Bridge following a crash involving a Menlo Park police vehicle during an active pursuit, authorities said.
According to Menlo Park police, the incident began after the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert for a vehicle connected to an assault with a deadly weapon investigation in unincorporated Redwood City. Officers later located the vehicle near Bay and Willow Roads in Menlo Park and attempted to pull it over, prompting the driver to flee.
Police said the suspect vehicle traveled through Menlo Park and onto the eastbound Dumbarton Bridge while officers pursued it.
During the chase, a Menlo Park police officer crashed into another vehicle on the bridge. Authorities said the officer was transported to a hospital with injuries that have not yet been disclosed. The other driver involved in the collision was not hurt.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Meanwhile, the suspect vehicle continued toward Fremont, and law enforcement agencies in the East Bay were notified to watch for the vehicle.
Officials urged motorists to avoid the eastbound Dumbarton Bridge for at least an hour due to the injury collision, which occurred west of the toll plaza. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and police said traffic delays and detours were expected as a tow truck worked to clear the roadway.
