Newsom Appoints Former CDC Leaders to California Health Department
Gov. Gavin Newsom is set to announce Monday that two public health officials removed during the Trump administration will be joining California’s health department, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
The New York Times first reported that former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez and former Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry will serve as consultants for the state.
Monarez, a microbiologist and immunologist, held the CDC director role for less than a month. Houry, who previously served as the agency’s chief medical officer and deputy director, worked under six CDC directors across four presidential administrations, including President Trump’s first term.
