The City of Oakland is preparing to celebrate hometown star and Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu, with plans for a community-wide event now underway.

While final details have yet to be announced, city officials shared Tuesday that they are coordinating with Liu’s team to determine a date for the celebration. In a social media post, Oakland praised Liu as a reflection of the city’s character, calling her a symbol of “heart, grit, resilience, and joy.” Officials added that her Olympic triumph has filled the community with pride and that more information about the festivities will be released soon.

Liu recently earned two gold medals at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, capturing the top spot in women’s singles figure skating and contributing to a victory in the mixed team figure skating competition.

The upcoming event aims to give Oakland residents an opportunity to come together and honor Liu’s historic achievements on the world stage.
