San Jose high school athletic trainer accused of sexual battery

A high school athletic trainer was accused of sexual battery and owning child sexual abuse material (CSAM), San Jose police said on Wednesday.

Police said they responded to a report of sexual battery at Archbishop Mitty High School on Oct. 8 around 7:30 p.m. There, officers contacted a 16-year-old female student, who said a man was providing care for her sports-related injury when he sexually battered her and recorded it on his phone, authorities said.

Officials said the suspect was identified as 31-year-old Kelvin Chiu, an athletic trainer for the school.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect, his home and vehicles, according to the police department. Authorities said Chiu was located and apprehended in Fremont on Oct. 9.

After serving a search warrant at his home, detectives found CSAM on Chiu’s phone, the police department said. The suspect was transported and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in connection to crimes related to annoying or molesting a minor, production and possession of CSAM, and sexual battery, according to authorities.

Cynthia Shaw, the director of communications for the Diocese of San Jose, said Chiu has been an employee of Archbishop Mitty High School since May 2025. Shaw said Chiu was placed on administrative leave.

Due to Chiu’s position of trust, the police department said there may be additional victims. They encourage anyone with information about these cases to contact Detective Camarillo and Detective Widmer of the San Jose Police Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC)/Child Exploitation Detail (CED) Task Force via email: 4576@sanjoseca.gov, and 4581@sanjoseca.gov or by calling 408-277-4102.
