San Jose Investigates Vandalism After Third City Park Damaged
San Jose officials confirmed Wednesday that a third city park has been vandalized, adding to growing concerns after similar damage was discovered at two other parks earlier this week.
City crews found extensive tire tracks torn into the grass at Lone Hill Park, which officials believe were caused by a vehicle driving through the park and performing donuts. Similar damage was previously reported at Fowler Creek Park and Mount Pleasant Park in east San Jose.
For the first two parks, repair costs are estimated at roughly $10,000. The city is still assessing how much it will cost to restore Lone Hill Park. San Jose police have already received vandalism reports for the east San Jose parks, and another report will soon be filed for Lone Hill Park as the investigation continues.
The damage was especially upsetting for families visiting Lone Hill Park in the Cambrian neighborhood. Near the playground, large sections of grass were scarred with tire marks, dampening what is normally a family-friendly environment.
“We believe vehicles drove through the park and did donuts on the muddy grass,” said Amanda Rodriguez, public information manager for the city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department.
City officials say the vandalism comes at a difficult time, as repair costs strain an already tight budget.
“When funding is limited, intentional damage like this is really discouraging because it pulls resources away from routine park maintenance,” Rodriguez said.
Neighbors echoed that frustration, calling the damage disrespectful to a space meant for children and families.
“In a place where kids play and families gather for barbecues, it’s just obnoxious,” said Donovan, a San Jose resident.
The city is now asking the public for help. Anyone with information, including social media posts or tips, is encouraged to contact the city through its parks concerns hotline.
