Uber Driver Injured in Antioch Shooting Was Not Intended Target
An Uber driver was shot in Antioch last week while picking up passengers, though police say he was not the intended victim. The shooting occurred on Jan. 8, when the driver was struck in the neck. Despite the injury, he managed to drive away from the scene and call 911. Authorities say he is expected to recover.
Uber condemned the incident in a statement, calling the shooting deeply concerning. The company said it is working with law enforcement, continuing to investigate the matter, and wishing the driver a full recovery.
The incident is the second case this month in Antioch where a bystander was injured by gunfire meant for someone else. Just days earlier, an 11-year-old girl was shot in the head while riding with her family to the grocery store.
Antioch Mayor Ron Bernal described the situation as tragic and surprising, noting that gun violence in the city had declined over the past year. He said the shootings are believed to be isolated events, despite the city having seen a notable decrease in homicides, shootings, and auto thefts in 2025.
Bernal expressed hope that Antioch will continue striving to be a safe community where residents and visitors feel secure and enjoy a high quality of life.
