Former YouTube CEO’s son dies on UC Berkeley campus, officials say

The 19-year-old son of a former YouTube executive passed away last week at UC Berkeley, where he was a resident, according to officials and a relative.

The university confirmed that Marco Troper, a freshman at Berkeley, was found unresponsive on Tuesday afternoon at the university’s Clark Kerr Campus. Troper was later pronounced dead by emergency responders from the Berkeley fire department, the university said.

Esther Wojcicki, the mother of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, expressed in a Facebook post that the family is “devastated beyond comprehension” by the loss of her 19-year-old grandson, Troper.

Authorities noted that there were no indications of foul play, and the Alameda County coroner’s office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death, according to Janet Gilmore, the university’s senior director of strategic communications.

“Marco was the most kind, loving, smart, fun, and beautiful human being,” the grandmother’s post stated on Wednesday. “He was just starting his second semester of his freshman year at UC Berkeley, majoring in math, and was truly loving it.”

“Marco’s life was cut too short, and we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences that he will miss and we will miss together,” she added.

A message requesting additional comment was sent to Esther Wojcicki on Sunday.
