Man charged with killing VTA coworker makes court appearance
The man accused of shooting and killing his VTA coworker, reportedly over a gambling debt, made his first court appearance on Wednesday.
Duc Minh Bui did not enter a plea and remains in custody without bail.
Bui, a VTA bus driver, is accused of fatally shooting fellow bus driver Regulus Teotico at a VTA bus yard in San Jose last Friday.
Prosecutors claim they have substantial evidence against Bui.
“We have a witness near the crime scene and a CCTV camera at the VTA parking lot that captured parts of the incident,” stated Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Michael Gilman.
According to the sheriff’s office report, Teotico had informed someone he was meeting Bui, who was supposed to give him money, and asked the person to accompany him to ensure everything went smoothly. The report states that Bui approached Teotico’s car, opened the passenger door, and shot him three times. Prosecutors believe the motive was a dispute over a large gambling debt.
“The information we have suggests there was gambling on college and NFL football,” Gilman said, adding that the investigation into the extent of the gambling is ongoing.
Deputies executed a search warrant at Bui’s home and recovered three registered firearms. Bui now faces a murder charge with special allegations related to firearm use. He is scheduled to return to court in December to enter a plea.
If convicted on the murder charge and special allegations, Bui could be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Teotico, a father of two teenagers, had worked for VTA for 10 years. His coworkers remembered him as friendly and generous.
