California Election Officials Urge Voters to Know Their Rights Ahead of Primary Election

As California’s June 2 statewide primary election approaches, election officials are encouraging voters to prepare ahead of Election Day and understand their voting rights.

Polling places across the state will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber reminded voters that anyone still waiting in line when polls close at 8 p.m. is still legally entitled to cast a ballot and should remain in line until they have voted.

Officials also emphasized that registered voters can still vote even if their name does not appear on the roster at their assigned polling location. In those situations, voters may request a provisional ballot, which will be counted once election officials verify their eligibility.

Voters who make an error while filling out their ballot may also request a replacement ballot, provided the original ballot has not already been submitted.

Residents voting by mail can return their completed ballots at any polling place or vote center throughout California. Election officials reminded voters to sign the return envelope, as county offices compare signatures with those on file before ballots are processed and counted.

The California Voter Bill of Rights is included in the state’s Voter Information Guide mailed to registered households and will also be displayed at every polling place and vote center statewide.
