A thief has set their sights on a deli in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood
Police are currently investigating a break-in at Bertucelli’s La Villa, a deli in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood. The break-in occurred just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the deli as the latest target in a string of overnight burglaries in the area. Surveillance footage shows a thief breaking the front door with a rock before entering the deli.
Wearing a hoodie and with their face partially covered, the burglar headed straight for the cash register but found very little. The thief left after spending less than a minute inside the store. “We leave the tills open with nothing in them, so he didn’t get much, maybe just a few coins,” said owner Chris Bertucelli. “It was more about the damage than the theft.” The deli’s front door has since been boarded up.
Bertucelli mentioned that he and other local business owners are aware of the recent break-ins and are keeping an eye out for each other. Just last week, the Office Bar and Lounge in Willow Glen was hit by thieves, who made off with $1,000 and caused over $20,000 in damage. About a month ago, another break-in occurred at John’s of Willow Glen.
The crime wave isn’t limited to Willow Glen. Businesses across the South Bay, including Park Lane Lounge in West San Jose, Mike’s Place on Camden Avenue, and Kirk’s Steakburgers in Campbell, have also been targeted recently.
Tim Mulcahy of the Willow Glen Business Association hopes to see more police patrols in the area, especially during the early morning hours between 1 and 3 a.m., when the burglaries seem to happen. San Jose police have confirmed they are investigating the latest break-in at Bertucelli’s La Villa.
