California officials are seeking to eliminate the state’s gas tax and are actively engaging in a new initiative where they are offering compensation to individuals as they work towards finding a suitable alternative.

In this latest pilot program, select drivers are being offered $400 gift cards to participate in two distinct alternative payment models.

One model entails a flat per-mile rate, while the other involves an individualized rate that is determined by a vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
