San Jose is taking steps to find a replacement for the councilmember who was removed in disgrace
Residents of San Jose’s District 3 are calling for an election to select Omar Torres’ successor as their councilmember.
Torres, a former city councilmember, recently stepped down following his arrest on three counts of forcible sexual assault. The district has faced challenges, and his seat has been vacant during recent City Council meetings as he was under investigation for several weeks. Torres was also arrested in a separate incident on Nov. 5 and charged with three felony counts of child molestation.
Kiara Kassandra, the district’s Chief of Staff, mentioned that six employees are currently managed by San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and his office. She reassured residents that the district office is still operational. “Our focus remains on supporting the community, District 3 residents, local businesses, and ensuring downtown continues to thrive,” she said.
On Monday night, Kassandra emphasized, “We’re still answering calls, responding to emails, sending newsletters, and working for the community.”
Luis Mendoza, who has run his food truck, Mr. Shrimp, on 13th Street for the past two years, noted the ongoing challenges. “We’ve dealt with break-ins, fights, homelessness, and other issues,” he shared. Mendoza also mentioned frequent car accidents at 13th and Mission streets and expressed his desire for an election to allow residents to choose their representative rather than having one appointed by the city.
“I’m hoping they add more lighting, maybe a speed bump, or a stop sign at the corner,” Mendoza said.
Two memos related to the process for replacing the District 3 councilmember are currently being reviewed by the rules committee. If approved, they could appear on the City Council agenda for Nov. 19.
