Santa Clara police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 3-year-old; a suspect has been arrested

Santa Clara police are looking into the shooting death of a 3-year-old early Tuesday morning and have apprehended a suspect, the police department reported.

Around 2:25 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were called to the 3700 block of Poinciana Drive for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased victim at the scene. Shortly thereafter, law enforcement arrested a man near the complex.

While the victim’s age was not immediately clear, police later confirmed the child was three years old.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are unclear, but the man arrested was identified by police as the “reporting party’s live-in boyfriend.”

Santa Clara resident Sukhraj Singh expressed his distress over the incident, saying, “It’s really bad. I feel really bad about the guy who died, who was shot.” Singh recalled being on his way to the store across the street when he heard the gunshot. “I was just walking by, it was like 2:30 a.m., and we heard a loud bang from there,” he said, adding, “And a lady ran out crying. And after a few minutes, a lot of cops came in.”

Later in the morning, a group of people gathered outside, visibly upset about the incident. Residents of the complex expressed their shock, saying they are shaken by the events.

“It’s very alarming. … I was really surprised,” said Kat Lucas.

This marks the second homicide in Santa Clara this year, as reported by police. The first occurred on Jan. 16 and involved a man who allegedly killed his wife.

According to records, this was the first homicide in the city in more than three years, and Santa Clara has recorded just 11 homicides since 2015.
