The Bay Area housing market is so competitive that a house where a murder took place sold for $2.1 million

A Santa Clara house, where a Google software engineer allegedly beat his wife to death in January, sold for $2.1 million, as per sales records.

On January 16, police discovered Xuanyi Yu, also a Google employee, dead in the home after a friend reported that neither Yu nor her husband, Liren Chen, were responding to calls or the door. The friend saw Chen inside, “motionless on his knees, with hands in the air and staring blankly.”

Upon entering, police found 27-year-old Chen covered in blood, with Yu dead on the bedroom floor, suffering severe blunt force injuries to her head. Chen has been charged with murder and remains in custody.

The home’s listing didn’t mention the alleged murder but highlighted features like the “fairy tale-esque high pitched roof” and “charming exterior.”

“Move-in ready and ideally located in the heart of Santa Clara, this home is conveniently close to everything. Cycle to Apple Park in minutes!” the listing read.

Listing agent Sylvia Tian explained that selling the home prevented financial ruin for both Yu and Chen’s families, who are in China and couldn’t afford the mortgage. Tian noted that the sale also benefits the neighborhood, and the buyers chose to remain anonymous.

“An empty house isn’t good for anyone,” Tian remarked, noting that the property had already been broken into twice while vacant.

Yu and Chen had only lived in the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house for less than a year after purchasing it for $2.05 million in April 2023, with its value increasing by 3.4%.

The house was listed in May and received an offer within just nine days. However, the sale took nearly three months to finalize—much longer than the typical 30 days—due to Tian’s limited access to Chen, who remains in custody without bail at the Santa Clara County jail.

“Selling the property and recouping some of the family’s loss benefits everyone,” Tian said.
