The Dungeness crab season has officially begun across the Bay Area
The Dungeness crab season officially began on Sunday after multiple delays.
People from across the Bay Area headed to Half Moon Bay to buy fresh crab from commercial crab boats.
“It’s the main thing we try to do every year,” said Chris Burkett from Livermore. While Dungeness crab was typically available by mid-November in the past, recent years have seen delays, as commercial crabbing south of the Sonoma-Mendocino County line was not permitted until now.
“The people came, and that’s a blessing, and the people wait for the best,” said fisherman Barry Day.
State wildlife officials explained that the delays were necessary to protect migrating whales.
“It is what it is, as long as the whales are safe. I can wait and get my crab. Coming out here with everyone else is a little exciting,” said Karen Hil of American Canyon.
Fisherman Matt Juanes noted that while last year’s season began with rain, this year was marked by sunny skies and long lines for crab.
“I’m glad to have this opportunity, and selling directly to the public like a small business owner is awesome,” he said.
