A Tesla owner in California has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, claiming the automaker has failed to deliver on its long-promised fully self-driving technology.

Tom Losavio, once an enthusiastic supporter of the brand, said he spent about $100,000 on a Model S and an additional $8,000 for the company’s heavily promoted self-driving software. He expected the feature would eventually allow the car to operate entirely on its own, taking passengers to their destinations without input.

Nearly a decade later, Losavio says that promise remains unmet. He argues the system still falls short of being truly autonomous, leaving him frustrated and disappointed.

As a result, he is seeking a refund for the self-driving package and asking the court to stop Tesla from advertising the feature as fully self-driving.

Critics like Dan O’Dowd, founder of the Dawn Project, say this case reflects broader concerns. He claims Tesla has overstated its capabilities, suggesting the company uses such promises to boost vehicle sales and investor confidence.

The lawsuit is one of several filed globally by Tesla customers challenging claims made by CEO Elon Musk about the technology’s readiness.

For Losavio, the experience has shifted his perspective. Once a firm believer in Tesla’s vision, he now views the company’s claims with skepticism.

Tesla has not responded to requests for comment.
