A California woman who had been missing for 12 days was found alive after being lost in the wilderness
A California woman was discovered this week atop a river canyon near the Yuba River in Northern California, 12 days after she went missing from a mining campsite.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that the 24-year-old woman from Sacramento was found severely dehydrated and emaciated. She was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, though the full extent of her injuries remains unknown.
Sgt. Dustin Moe, who located the woman, expressed gratitude for her safe recovery, noting the extensive efforts made by the Sheriff’s Office and search and rescue volunteers.
Esmeralda Marie Pineda had gone missing in August while camping with friends in Nevada City, about 63 miles from Sacramento. She had mentioned wanting to return to Sacramento before she vanished the following morning. Officials believe she climbed the canyon walls before being rescued, though details of her survival over nearly two weeks in the wilderness are unclear.
The search began on the day she disappeared, with law enforcement and volunteers having to rappel into and out of the challenging canyon terrain, according to the sheriff’s office.
