Caltrain hosts Electrification Day and introduces its new fleet of electric trains
Caltrain celebrated the launch of its new electric train service with an “Electrification Day” event on Saturday.
The new electric fleet is touted as cleaner and quieter, with trains running every 15-20 minutes during peak times, enabling the agency to expand weekend services. To mark the occasion, Caltrain offered free rides throughout the weekend.
Alongside the inaugural festivities, another event is planned for Sunday in San Mateo. Celebrations along the peninsula included games, giveaways, food trucks, live music, and performances.
“This is a major milestone. It means more frequent, faster, cleaner, and quieter service. It’s a significant upgrade for the commuter rail that serves as Silicon Valley’s backbone,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.
The new trains feature amenities like Wi-Fi, power outlets, more storage, baby-changing tables, and enhanced climate control.
One of the trains was named after Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, a strong advocate for Caltrain. “I’m so proud of our collective effort. We had a vision and we stayed committed to it,” Eshoo commented.
