Man Accused of Carrying Explosive Device Through Sacramento Airport Security

A Sacramento man is facing federal charges after allegedly attempting to bring explosive material through a security checkpoint at Sacramento International Airport over the weekend, according to the Department of Justice.

Authorities say 49-year-old Kimani Osayande Jones, also known as Kimani Osayande Jackson, tried to pass through a TSA checkpoint around 9 p.m. Saturday while preparing to board a flight. He was reportedly wearing a face covering and latex gloves at the time.

According to court documents, his carry-on bag contained an M-type explosive device along with a torch lighter, knife, scissors and blades, an aerosol can, and zip ties. Investigators also found five cellphones in his possession, including one set with a 15-minute timer and another displaying a message that read, “I’ll be awaiting your call.”

Officials said Jones was taken into custody and the explosive device was later tested, confirming it had the potential to cause harm. Authorities warned that if detonated aboard a pressurized aircraft at high altitude, the device could have damaged the plane and possibly caused a loss of cabin pressure.

If convicted, Jones could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
