Can laid-off tech workers find new opportunities in the evolving industry? Here’s what experts think
With many tech companies explaining that their recent layoffs were part of a strategy to refocus on machine learning, there are concerns that the laid-off workers might be perceived as outdated and not aligned with Silicon Valley’s future direction.
Some recently displaced employees report that without artificial intelligence skills listed on their LinkedIn profiles, they are being overlooked for positions at companies shifting towards AI.
Human resources experts and leaders of AI-focused companies suggest this is understandable. They emphasize that it’s crucial for job seekers in the tech industry to stay current with the latest trends in Silicon Valley.
HR consultant Laurie Reuttimann noted, “If you’ve been laid off from a company that’s heavily pivoting to AI, there might be a stigma from recruiters and HR leaders, or even from general business leaders, who may doubt your ability to adapt to the new economy.”
Angela Hoover, CEO of Andi, highlighted the importance of AI experience, stating, “At Andi, we would prioritize someone with a year of practical AI experience over someone with a decade of experience in a different area.”
